UCR is consistently ranked among the top universities in the country for community service and surveys show that UCR students have a high interest in connecting to the community. In 2015 the Washington Monthly ranked UCR 3rd overall in community service. UCR has been named to the Presidential Honor Roll for the impact our students have on their community. A 2017 survey of incoming students showed that close to 90% of students mentioned there was a “very strong chance” or “some chance” they would participate in community service while at UCR. UCR students are interested in doing community service and Leadership and Service Programs wants to provide them with those opportunities.
Martin Luther King Day of Service
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. dedicated his life to serving others and fighting for civil rights. He famously said, “Everyone can be great because everyone can serve.” Every year on MLK Day we organize a large-scale service day called "MLK Day of Service" to honor the work and legacy of this true American hero. Even though this is a national holiday and the campus is closed, we challenge everyone to “take a day on” and serve their community. This is our winter quarter large-scale service day and it takes place every January. These activities count toward the "Society" requirement of the Leadership in Action Certificate Program.
Love Riverside Day of Service
Love Riverside is a non-profit organization in the City of Riverside that organizes an annual large-scale service day by the same name. Leadership and Service Programs has partnered up with Love Riverside to get more UCR students connected to this program and participate in service projects throughout Riverside side-by-side with members of the community. This is our fall quarter large-scale service program and typically takes place in October. These activities count toward the "Society" requirement of the Leadership in Action Certificate Program.
The Community Service Portal
The office of Student Life, in collaboration with Student Engagement, has launched an all new community service portal. This online platform is your one-stop-shop for all things “service” at UCR. Connect with community organizations, explore community service projects, find out about Service Learning courses and report all of your service hours. These activities count toward the "Society" requirement of the Leadership in Action Certificate Program.
